What to Expect From Your Lifestyle Family Session

Family photography comes in many beautiful forms, from classic posed studio portraits, to completely un-posed documentary-style sessions. While there’s no “right” or “wrong” style, it is important to find a photographer whose approach aligns with the amount of direction you would like in a session, and whose portfolio aligns with the feeling you want to remember from this season of your life.

At Mikaela Grace Photography, my approach leans toward Lifestyle Family Photography, which is a relaxed, connection-focused approach that blends natural interactions with gentle direction. This style falls somewhere in the middle of the photography spectrum. It is more natural and story-driven than traditional formal posed portraits, but more guided than pure documentary style work. I find that for many of my families, the most meaningful images come from real moments, thoughtfully guided but never forced.

A Gentle, Guided, and Authentic Experience.

During your session, you can expect a blend of relaxed posing and natural prompts designed to help you interact in genuine ways. I’ll offer direction when it’s helpful, like where to stand, how to hold your child, or little prompts or games to spark connection. But I will also step back and give your family space to be yourselves. This balance allows your photos to feel authentic and emotional, while still being beautifully composed.

What Our Time Together Typically Looks Like

Every session unfolds a bit differently, informed by your family’s size, the ages of your children, the location, and the amount of time we have to spend together. Still, I follow a general flow to ensure we capture the most popular “must-have” combinations and any you specify in your client questionnaire. In each of the below structured combinations, I will encourage movement, play, and natural interaction so the images feel relaxed and alive.

Here’s the rhythm you can expect:

  • Ease-In Portraits: We will start with a few simple, camera-facing family photos. These give you the classic portraits everyone loves and help break the ice, especially for little ones who may feel more comfortable starting close to their parents.
  • Family Groupings: Once we have those gently posed family shots, we will move onto:
  • All the children together
  • Individual portraits of each child
  • Couple and/or individual parent portraits
  • Parent(s) with each individual child, if desired (these are especially sought after by moms who rarely find themselves in front of the camera)
  • Candid, Playful Moments: With the essentials captured, we will use the remaining time to settle into candid connections. This may include cuddles, walks, tickles, or quiet moments - whatever feels most natural for your family. These often become the most cherished images from your session.

More Than Photos - Memories You Can Feel

Above all, I want your session to feel easy, meaningful, and grounded in what matters most: connection. My hope is that you’ll leave with images that reflect not just how this season looked, but how it felt.

If my approach resonates with you, I would truly love to connect and help tell your family’s story.
